    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Book Arts Studio student assistant performs a variety of tasks directly related to the operation of the Book Arts Studio at Boatwright Library. Students will be tasked with general studio maintenance, including: regular maintenance of studio equipment, supply organization, assisting with studio set up for instruction, redistributing metal type, and material prep for Book Arts projects and instruction. Position works moderately independently with frequent feedback from supervisor. Attention to detail and independent creative problem solving are crucial.

    Organizational Relationship:          

    • Reports to Book Arts Program Director

    SPECIFIC DUTIES:

    • Organizes and maintains accurate count of studio tools and materials
    • Performs daily maintenance of bookbinding and printing equipment
    • Preps materials and studio for class instruction
    • Assists Book Arts Program Director with creation of creative project samples
    • Assists with organization, set-up, and breakdown of Book Arts Studio pop-up maker events
    • Redistributes metal type to correct drawers after class use
    • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned

    Qualifications:

    • Interest in book arts and printmaking, specifically letterpress printing and book making
    • Employee must be a UR student in good-standing and currently enrolled at UR in either an undergraduate or graduate program
    • Previous experience with art materials, including drawing and relief printing
    • Must possesses the ability to pay attention to details, problem solve, and think critically
    • Must be able to lift objects weighing 30 pounds or less
    • Must be able to work independently and follow written instructions when necessary
    • Must communicate clearly and timely using both verbal skills and e-mail with full-time staff
    • Must be available to work 6­–12 hours per week between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday
    • Good attendance and timeliness are crucial and deviations from the scheduled must be reported on time

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Book Arts Studio student managers perform a variety of tasks directly related to the operation of the Book Arts Studio at Boatwright Library. Students will be tasked with the following: organizing and maintaining studio and supply inventory, assisting with studio set up for instruction, supply prep for Book Arts classroom instruction, daily maintenance of binding and printing equipment, redistributing metal type, creating book structure samples for classroom instruction, training Book Arts Studio Assistants on daily studio tasks, and working closely with the Book Arts Program Director to develop Book Arts projects. Position works largely independently with frequent feedback from supervisor. Attention to detail and independent problem solving are crucial.

    ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:

    • Book Arts Program Director

    SPECIFIC DUTIES:

    • Organizes and maintains inventory of studio tools and materials, including Kits
    • Performs daily maintenance of bookbinding and printing equipment
    • Preps materials and studio for class instruction and maker events
    • Redistributes metal type to correct locations after class use
    • Assists students during Book Arts Studio open hours
    • Assists Book Arts Program Director with distribution of tools and materials during class instruction
    • Creates book and print samples for class instruction
    • Works closely with Book Arts Program Director to develop content for campus, community, and exhibition programming
    • Trains Book Arts Studio Assistants on use of studio equipment, including printing and bookbinding methods
    • Perform other assigned duties as needed

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Previous experience in printmaking, bookmaking, or book arts.
    • Must possesses the ability to pay attention to details, problem solve, and think critically.
    • Must be able to lift objects weighing 30 pounds or less.
    • Flexible and able to multi-task.
    • Must be able to work independently and follow written instructions when necessary.
    • Works individually with little supervision.
    • Works 8-12 hours per week, Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
