Job Statement:

The University Libraries General Services Student Assistant (GSSA) performs a variety of tasks directly related to the operation of the General Services Division at Boatwright Library. Students perform vital functions such as pulling materials for resource sharing, processing mail and materials, as well as digital scanning. Position works largely independently with frequent feedback from supervisor. Attention to detail and independent problem solving are crucial.

Essential Functions/Specific Duties:

  • Locates and retrieves library materials
  • Opens and distributes incoming mail and packages from mail room
  • Manages basic resource sharing operations and workflows
  • Securely packs items for shipment via UR Document Delivery, US Mail, or UPS
  • Runs on campus errands to other branches and departments at UR
  • Scans items for loan or other use
  • Performs other unit duties and special projects as assigned
  • Participates in regular, shared stack maintenance to keep materials in good order
  • Round on printers and equipment to make sure of good working order
  • May round on building to make sure facilities are in good working order

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

  1. Employee must be a UR student in good-standing and currently enrolled at UR in either an undergraduate or graduate program including law school.
  2. Must possesses the ability to pay attention to details, problem solve, and think critically.
  3. Must be able to lift and shelve objects weighing 30 pounds or less.
  4. Must be able to work independently and follow written instructions when necessary.
  5. Must communicate clearly and timely using both verbal skills and e-mail with full time staff.
  6. Good attendance and timeliness are crucial and deviations from the schedule must be reported on time.
